Sound

“e” as in “bed.” Most Seoul speakers today say it the same as ㅔ.

How to write it

Three strokes: a vertical line, a short dash to the right, then a second vertical line.

• 개gaedog
• 배baepear; boat; belly
• 새saebird

Don't mix it up with

ㅔㅔ has its dash on the left of the first line. Same sound, different spelling — you just memorize which words use which.
