Korean Politeness Levels

Your boss at work

UseFormal (hapsyo-che)-습니다 / -ㅂ니다

Also common: Polite (haeyo-che) (-아요 / -어요)

Why

Reports, meetings and anything official to a superior go in the formal hapsyo style. In a relaxed chat by the coffee machine, haeyo is fine — but never banmal unless they clearly invite it.

Say it like this

  • 보고서 다 끝냈습니다.bogoseo da kkeunnaetseumnida. · Formal (hapsyo-che)I've finished the report.
  • 회의 자료 준비했습니다.hoeui jaryo junbihaetseumnida. · Formal (hapsyo-che)I've prepared the meeting materials.
  • 커피 드실래요?keopi deusillaeyo? · Polite (haeyo-che)Would you like a coffee?

Common mistake

Answering a boss with a casual “알았어요” (got it). At work, “알겠습니다” (understood) is the expected reply.
