How the teams are made

Everyone is shuffled once, then dealt into the teams one at a time, like dealing cards. That keeps the teams as even as possible: with 7 people and 3 teams you get 3, 2 and 2, never 5, 1 and 1.

Good for pickup games, class projects, quiz nights and dinner tables. If you want to balance skill, put the strongest players on separate draws — this splitter only promises luck, not balance.

How does the Team Splitter decide who's on which team?

Press Make teams and your browser adds a random 8-character code to the link, after the names and the number of teams. The code, the team count and the names are hashed into a seed for a mulberry32 random number generator, which runs one Fisher–Yates shuffle. The shuffled list is then dealt in turn: the 1st person to Team A, the 2nd to Team B and so on, wrapping back to A after the last team.

You can enter 2 to 30 names and choose 2 to 10 teams, never more teams than names. Changing the number of teams with the same code reshuffles everyone, because the count is part of the seed. The letters are only labels in dealing order; Team A gets nobody special, just the first extra person when the numbers don't divide evenly. There is no database: the link holds the names and the code, and opening it rebuilds exactly the same teams on any device.

Limits: it only randomizes. It doesn't know skill, age, friendships or who should be kept apart, so a lopsided split can happen by pure luck. Anyone holding the link can read every name, and making teams again produces a new link with new teams.
