5-Second Quiz: Geography

Capitals, flags and landmarks. The biggest city is often a trap.

10 questions · 5 seconds each · 3 easy, 4 medium, 3 hard

Faster right answers score more. Running out of time counts as wrong.

This is the quiz where the obvious answer is often the wrong one: Türkiye's capital isn't Istanbul, Morocco's isn't Casablanca, and Switzerland officially has no capital at all. Add flags, oceans, mountains, famous landmarks and the money you'd pay with.

Answers were checked on each country's own government sites, national banks, UNESCO and NOAA. Disputed borders, politics and rankings that change every year are left out on purpose.

Grades

  1. 0–39 ptsTourist — You know the postcards. The capitals behind them are next.
  2. 40–59 ptsTraveler — A real traveler — a couple of big cities fooled you, that's all.
  3. 60–79 ptsNavigator — Navigator. The far corners slowed you down, never the map.
  4. 80–100 ptsGeographer — Geographer. You picked the capital before the big city could tempt you.

How scoring works

A right answer is worth 1 point plus up to 0.5 for speed — the more of the 5 seconds you have left, the bigger the bonus. Wrong answers and timeouts score nothing. The total is scaled to 100.

Ten right answers at about 2.5 seconds each lands just above 80 — the top grade. Nine right needs real speed to get there.

“Top %” is an estimate, not a leaderboard. It models players of different skill answering easy, medium and hard questions (about 76%, 54% and 33% right overall) in 1 to 5 seconds, and shows the share who would score at least as high as you. No one's results are stored.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the biggest city the answer?

Often it isn't the capital — Sydney, Istanbul, Lagos and Casablanca are bigger than the cities that actually host their governments. Those near misses are the whole game here.

Are disputed places or borders in the quiz?

No. Anything contested, political or ranked by numbers that change every year is left out, so every answer has one clear right option.

Where do the geography answers come from?

Each country's own government or national tourism site, central banks for currencies, UNESCO for landmarks and NOAA for the oceans. Your result links every source.
