First love, forever seventeen.
A high-teen K-drama (haitin, 하이틴, or hakwonmul, 학원물, school drama) follows Korean high-school students — uniforms, rivals, exams, friendship and first love.
It's you if…
- You still remember your locker combination.
- You love a love triangle and pretend you don't.
- A friendship arc can make you cry faster than any romance.
The surprise
High-teen fans are often the oldest viewers in the room. It's nostalgia, not school, that you're tuning in for.

- Boys Over Flowers (꽃보다 남자, 2009) — A dry cleaner's daughter stands up to the four richest boys at an elite school.

Beginner's tip
You'll hear seonbae (선배, older student) and hubae (후배, younger student) constantly; they shape who speaks politely to whom. School uniforms with name tags help you track a big cast.
In Korean culture
Many Korean high-schoolers stay late for evening self-study, yaja (야자, short for yagan jayul hakseup), which is why so many school dramas happen after dark. KBS's long-running School series, which began in 1999, made the school drama a fixture of Korean TV.
