Which K-Drama Should You Watch?

K-drama genre

Sageuk

사극 sageuk

You'd survive palace politics. Barely.

A sageuk (사극) is a Korean historical drama, usually set in the Joseon dynasty (1392–1897) or earlier, full of royal courts, power struggles, hanbok and old-fashioned formal speech.

It's you if…

  • You've paused a show to look up a real king.
  • Costume details matter to you as much as the plot.
  • You enjoy watching very polite people ruin each other.

The surprise

Sageuk fans are often the funniest viewers — you collect the over-the-top court speeches and quote them at work.

Start with

  • Jewel in the Palace (대장금, 2003) — A cook in the royal kitchen works her way up to become a court physician.
  • Mr. Sunshine (미스터 션샤인, 2018) — Love and resistance in Joseon at the turn of the 20th century.

Beginner's tip

Characters speak an old, formal Korean. Two words go a long way: jeonha (전하) means “Your Majesty,” and mama (마마) follows royal titles, as in jungjeon-mama (중전마마) for the queen. Many sageuk run longer than 16 episodes, so pace yourself.

In Korean culture

Sageuk combines sa (史, history) and geuk (劇, drama). Fans split the genre into jeongtong (정통) sageuk, which sticks close to recorded history, and fusion sageuk, which mixes history with fantasy, romance or modern humor.
