Korean Etiquette

Being asked your age

Why

Age decides how people talk to each other, so asking it early is practical, not nosy.

Do

  • Answer with your birth year — it's what people really want.
  • Expect them to adjust how they address you afterward.

Avoid

  • Don't take it as rude.
  • Don't ask an obviously much older person their age directly — ask politely or not at all.

Useful sentence

실례지만 몇 년생이세요?sillyejiman myeot nyeonsaengiseyo? If you don't mind me asking, what year were you born?

These are general customs; people, generations and situations vary — kindness covers most mistakes.
