Korean Etiquette

Paying the bill

Why

Traditionally the eldest or the person who invited pays; splitting is now common among friends.

Do

  • Pay at the counter on the way out, not at the table.
  • If someone treats you, offer to pay next time (or buy coffee after).

Avoid

  • Don't fight too hard if an elder insists on paying.
  • Don't ask staff to split by item at a busy lunch.
