What Color Is Your Personality?

Color personality

Tyrian Purple

Made slowly, and made to last.

Tyrian purple is the ancient dye made from sea snails and worn by emperors, and as a personality it's the quietly regal one: selective, loyal and impossible to imitate.

It's you if…

  • You have three close friends and would cross an ocean for any of them.
  • You'd rather own one perfect thing than a drawer of almost-right ones.
  • You don't chase attention; people notice anyway.

The surprise

Tyrian Purples are far less fussy than they seem. The dye works that made the color were famous for their smell — your elegance has always had a down-to-earth side.

The real story of this color

Tyrian purple was made from the glands of Mediterranean sea snails and named after Tyre, in today's Lebanon. In 1909 the chemist Paul Friedländer used 12,000 snails to get just 1.4 grams of pure dye — about enough for the trim of one garment — which explains why Roman emperors at times kept the color for themselves.

Frequently asked questions

What does Tyrian purple mean as a personality color?

Rarity and loyalty: someone selective, dignified and devoted to a few people and things.

How was Tyrian purple made?

From the mucus glands of Mediterranean sea snails, left to react in sunlight. It took thousands of snails to dye even a small piece of cloth.

Why was purple the color of royalty?

Because Tyrian purple was so costly. When Paul Friedländer recreated it in 1909, 12,000 snails gave him only 1.4 grams of dye.
