Which Dog Breed Are You?
Golden retriever, border collie or shiba? Seven scenes, one breed and the job it was made for.
Some people are golden retrievers: everyone's friend by lunchtime. Some are shibas: loyal, on their own terms. Seven everyday scenes match you to one of eight well-known dog breeds, and each result tells you what that breed was really bred to do — herding, hunting, sledding or racing.
The eight breeds
- Golden RetrieverEveryone's friend by lunchtime.
- Border CollieBrilliant, focused, always needs a job.
- Shiba InuIndependent, dignified, loyal on their own terms.
- Siberian HuskyAdventurous, dramatic, built to roam.
- CorgiSmall, confident, quietly in charge.
- DachshundBrave, stubborn, fiercely loyal.
- BeagleCurious, sociable, led by the nose.
- GreyhoundFast when it counts, calm the rest of the time.
How does the dog breed personality quiz decide?
Each scene has four answers; each answer gives two points to the breed it fits best and one to a close neighbor. The breed with the most points is yours, and a tie is settled by your answer string, so the same answers always give the same breed.
The personalities are a playful shorthand, and real dogs are individuals: a 2022 study of more than 18,000 dogs found that breed explains only about 9% of the differences in behavior between them (Morrill and colleagues, Science). This quiz isn't advice on which dog to adopt — meet the actual dog.
