Which Dog Breed Are You?

Dog breed personality

Golden Retriever

You've never met a stranger — only friends you haven't hugged yet.

A Golden Retriever personality is warm, optimistic and loyal: the friend who greets everyone like they've been gone for a year and makes any room feel friendlier.

It's you if…

  • You've made friends in a queue, a lift and a dentist's waiting room.
  • You believe the best about people until they prove otherwise — and sometimes after.
  • You remember birthdays, and you show up with snacks.

The surprise

Golden Retrievers have a stubborn streak. Under the sunshine is someone who will not drop a thing they care about — ask anyone who has tried to take a ball away.

What the breed was made for

The golden retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands by Dudley Marjoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth. His own stud book records that in 1868 he bred Nous, a yellow wavy-coated retriever, with Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel — a breed now extinct. The aim was a gundog that could fetch shot birds gently from water and rough ground, which is why goldens love carrying things in their mouths.
